PROFIT FOR VALUE

PROFIT FOR VALUE

Dear esteemed donor,

My name is Nigel Meshack Omondi, a passionate young Kenyan with a deep love for fashion and and an unwavering commitment to uplifting my community.

I am writing to respectfully request your support in funding the startup of a profitable fashion enterprise. This business will not only generate sustainable income but will also channel a significant portion of its profits toward supporting underprivileged families facing challenges like homelessness, drought, and food insecurity in Kenya.

My Motivation

I have been deeply moved by the struggles within my own family and the broader Kenyan society. My parents, who have worked tirelessly their entire lives, currently own nothing – not even a place to call home. They rely on irregular support and live with constant uncertainty of eviction or inadequate shelter.

Stories in the news about severe droughts in regions like Turukana and Garissa, leading to starvation and displacement of thousands; in some cases crime among the youth, further fuel my resolve. These are not distant statistics; they represent real families like mine who deserve dignity and opportunity. I refuse to remain a bystander. Instead, I want to build a bridge between economic empowerment and direct social impact.

The Business Idea: Luxel Prive

I propose starting a fashion business focussed on creating and selling high- quality culturally inspired clothing and accessories. Leveraging Kenya's rich textile heritage and my passion for design, the business will blend modern trends with African prints (such as kitenge and Maasai shuka patterns) to appeal to both local and international markets. The business will not however be limited to the cultural clothing.

Practical Operations and Examples:

Product Line: We will design and produce ready-to-wear garments like dresses, shirts, trousers, and accessories using locally sourced fabrics from Kenyan weavers and artisans in places like Kisumu, Mombasa, and Nairobi's textile markets. For instance, a signature "Empowerment Dress" line made from sustainable cotton could retail at Kes2500 – Kes4000, making it accessible to middle-class Kenyans while offering premium custom tailoring for events.
Sales Channels: Start with a small physical boutique in a high-traffic area like Nairobi's Eastlands or university-adjacent spot, combined with an online store on platforms like Jumia, TikTok, and Instagram. Real -world example: Similar businesses like "Sokoni" or emerging Kenyan brands have successfully scaled by marketing vibrant, eco-friendly fashion to diaspora customers via social media, achieving great mirgins within the first two years.
Employment and Skills Development: The business will initially employ 5-10 local tailors, seamstresses, and young designers from underprivileged backgrounds, providing om-the-job training. This mirrors successful models like those supported by organizations such as Kenya Fashion Week initiatives, where youth training programs have led to self-employment.
Sustainability Edge: We will emphasize ethical sourcing and upcycling of fabrics to reduce waste, appealing to conscious consumers and potentially qualifying for green business grants later.
Projected Profitability: With an initial investment, the business can break even within 12-18 months. Based on conservative estimates from similar Kenyan startups:
Startup Costs: Kes1.5-3million for rent deposit, sewing machines, initial fabric stock, marketing, and basic website.
Monthly revenue target: Year 1: Kes800,000-1.2 million through 200-300 units sold.
Net Profit margin: 25-35% after costs, allowing us to allocate at least 40% of profits (e.g Ksh100,000-200,000 monthly once stable) to social causes.
Social Impact: Profits will directly fund initiatives such as: Providing emergency food rations and drought relief kits to families in arid areas (partnering with locals NGOs like Kenya Red Cross). Supporting housing or rent assistance for families like my parents'. Running free fashion skills workshops for unemployed youth, creating a cycle of empowerment.
This is a self-sustaining model: A profitable business that grows and gives back, rather than relying solely on donations.

Funding Request

I am seeking around 25,000 dollars as startup capital. This will cover:

Equipment and initial inventory (40%)
Shop setup and licensing (20%)
Marketing and digital presence (20%)
Working capital for the first 6 months (20%)
In return, I offer full transparency through regular progress reports, financial statements, and impact metrics. I am open to mentorship, equity sharing if preffered, or any structure that aligns with your philanthropic goals.

I have a business plan, design portfolio, and market research ready-only the seed funding is missing to turn this dream to reality. With your support, we can transform personal hardship into communal hope.

Thank you for considering this request. I would be honored to discuss this further via call, meeting, or video. Together, we can weave fashion into a powerful tool for change in Kenya, and even beyond.

Sincerely,

Nigel Meshack Omondi,
