Masjid – Prayer hall for Muslim community in isolated hill tracts area in Chittagong, Bangladesh

Abstract

Remote hill tracts and isolated regions of Bangladesh remain among the most underserved communities in terms of religious infrastructure, social cohesion, and community services. Establishing a 500 sq.ft. Masjid in these regions will provide long-term spiritual, social, and developmental benefits. This proposal outlines the need, expected impacts, and detailed cost structure for constructing a community Masjid that will serve as a centre of worship, guidance, education, and social support. The project seeks international donor support to ensure vulnerable and geographically disconnected populations have dignified access to essential religious facilities.

Information of the project:
Masjid size: 500+ square feet
Estimated number of accommodations in Masjid: 70+ person max
Projected time to complete the project: 60+ days.

Religious Impact

A Masjid plays a central role in the spiritual life of Muslims. In the hill tracts, communities often walk long distances (over 4 -5km) through difficult terrain to attend congregational prayers or access religious learning. A locally accessible Masjid ensures daily prayers, Jumu’ah, Eid congregations, Qur’an recitation, and Islamic teachings are available to all, regardless of geographical challenges. It strengthens faith-based values, encourages moral development, and allows children and youth to grow with Islamic guidance. The presence of a Masjid also supports religious harmony and preserves cultural-religious identity in regions where such services are limited.

Sadagah jariyah impact (Perpetual Impact)

Constructing a mosque is regarded in Islamic tradition as one of the most enduring forms of charity, and it carries profound implications for one’s afterlife. A mosque is not merely a physical structure; it functions as a sanctuary where individuals cultivate spiritual discipline, moral refinement, and communal harmony. By contributing to the establishment of a mosque, a person enables countless worshippers to engage in prayer, reflection, and learning. Each act of devotion performed within that space becomes a source of continuous reward for the benefactor, even long after their lifetime. This concept, known as sadaqah jariyah – a perpetual charity – underscores the belief that good deeds can generate lasting spiritual dividends. Moreover, supporting a mosque strengthens the ethical and social fabric of a community, fostering unity, compassion, and shared responsibility. In Islamic thought, such contributions elevate one’s moral standing and are believed to illuminate the path toward salvation in the Hereafter. Thus, building a mosque is not simply an act of generosity; it is an investment in enduring spiritual merit that transcends the boundaries of earthly life.

International Impact

International donors contributing to this project will directly support the advancement of global religious freedom, humanitarian development, and community upliftment. Building a Masjid in marginalized regions aligns with global SDG goals related to reducing inequalities, supporting peaceful, societies, and empowering, remote, communities. Such initiatives enhance cross-border goodwill and serve as a symbol of international solidarity with disadvantaged Muslim populations. Donor participation will be publicly acknowledged, reinforcing global cooperation in uplifting faith-based community institutions.

Social Impact

Beyond a place of worship, the Masjid serves as a community hub. In isolated areas, it becomes a space for meetings, social counselling, dispute resolution, community announcements, and emergency coordination. The Masjid promotes unity, reduces social conflict, and encourages ethical behavior and collective responsibility. It strengthens bonds between families and acts as a stabilizing institution during environmental challenges, especially in regions prone to landslides, flash floods, or seasonal isolation.

Community Impact

The Masjid will extend its benefits through:
• Adult education sessions (literacy, moral teachings)
• Youth programs promoting discipline and positive engagement
• Community awareness activities on health, safety, and disaster response
• Shelter, support, during, emergencies by providing a safe and trusted space, the Masjid encourages collective empowerment, improved communication, and stronger community resilience.
