Help Mama Beatrinia Foundation to Expand Dog Vaccination and Welfare Education Initiatives in Kasese Uganda.

Help Mama Beatrinia Foundation to expand its dog vaccination and welfare education initiatives in Kasese Municipality, Uganda. The project aims to increase rabies vaccination coverage among dogs and improve community awareness of responsible pet ownership and humane treatment of animals. Interventions include mobile vaccination clinics, community outreach, educational campaigns, basic veterinary treatment, and a spay/neuter pilot
The purpose of this project is to expand existing initiatives, increase rabies vaccination coverage, improve community awareness, address health risks, and initiate population control. The project also aims to save human lives, reduce healthcare burdens, improve dog welfare, and align with public health priorities.
Kasese Municipality faces a significant challenge regarding dog health and welfare. A large number of dogs remain unvaccinated against rabies, posing a serious threat to both human and animal populations. Additionally, there is widespread lack of awareness among dog owners about proper pet care.
Dogs suffering from injuries, wounds, and diseases are often neglected. In many cases, they are left untreated, allowed to die, or subjected to harmful traditional practices such as applying ash or crude oils to wounds. This leads to severe infections, prolonged suffering, and increased risk of zoonotic disease transmission.
Furthermore, dogs are often undervalued compared to livestock such as cattle because they do not provide direct economic benefits like meat or milk. This perception contributes to poor welfare practices and neglect. There is also lack of dog population control as a result there is increased number of both owned and stray dogs suffering and many more are being born in harsh conditions.
Despite Mama Beatrinia Foundation’s ongoing efforts in vaccination and education, limited financial resources have restricted the reach, consistency, and sustainability of these interventions.
Project objectives:
1. To vaccinate at least 600 dogs against rabies within the project period.
2. To provide basic treatment for injured, sick, and neglected dogs.
3. To educate communities on responsible pet ownership and humane animal care.
4. To reduce cases of rabies and improve public health awareness.
Targeted Animals and Community
The project targets dogs within Kasese Municipality, Uganda, and the community members residing in Kasese Municipality.
Number of Animals That Will Directly Benefit from This Project
600 dogs will be vaccinated against rabies. Additionally, 20 dogs will be sterilized and other dogs suffering from injuries, wounds, and diseases will receive basic treatment.
Main Activities
The project will be implemented through the following key activities:
1. Mass Dog Vaccination Campaigns: Organizing mobile vaccination clinics, mobilizing dog owners with local leaders, and providing free rabies vaccinations.
2. Basic Veterinary Treatment Services: Treating wounds, sores, infections, and common diseases; providing antiseptics and basic medications; and demonstrating proper wound care to dog owners.
3. Community Education and Awareness: Conducting community meetings and sensitization sessions, distributing educational materials on pet care and rabies prevention, and engaging schools and local groups.
4. Capacity Building: Training community volunteers on basic animal care and monitoring, and establishing local champions for continued awareness.
5. Monitoring and Evaluation: Tracking the number of dogs vaccinated and treated, assessing community knowledge before and after interventions, and documenting lessons and impact.
