Imagine being a 13-year-old girl who eagerly walks to school every morning, full of dreams for the future. Then one day, you get your first period. No one has prepared you for it. You don't have sanitary pads, clean water, or a private place to change. Embarrassed by stains on your uniform and afraid of being laughed at, you stay home. Days turn into weeks of missed learning. Eventually, many girls fall behind, lose confidence, and some never return to school.
This is the reality for thousands of girls across Uganda and many other parts of the world. Menstruation should never determine whether a girl receives an education, yet period poverty, stigma, and lack of menstrual health education continue to rob girls of opportunities every single month.
Menstruate Without Hesitation #NoMissedSchoolDays is a global fundraising campaign committed to changing this reality by ensuring that every girl has the knowledge, confidence, and practical skills to manage her menstruation with dignity. The campaign is built upon the successful #NoMissedSchoolDays initiative founded in Uganda in 2019, which was created to tackle one of the leading causes of school absenteeism among adolescent girls through education, advocacy, skills development, and sustainable menstrual health solutions.
More than Pads, Building Skills for Life
While many menstrual health programmes focus on donating disposable sanitary pads, Menstruate Without Hesitation #NoMissedSchoolDays believes that lasting change comes from equipping girls with practical skills that remain with them long after the donations end.
Through the campaign, girls and young women are trained to design and produce reusable sanitary pads, learning sewing, tailoring, product development, quality control, and menstrual health management. These are not simply hygiene skills they are livelihood skills.
By producing reusable pads, girls gain:
* A sustainable solution for managing their own periods.
* Practical vocational skills that can generate income.
* Greater confidence and self-esteem.
* The opportunity to become peer educators and community leaders.
* A pathway towards entrepreneurship and financial independence.
For many participants, the reusable pad initiative becomes their first small business, enabling them to sell affordable menstrual products within their communities while helping other girls stay in school. This transforms menstruation from a barrier into an opportunity for leadership and economic empowerment.
A Proven Model with Lasting Impact
The campaign builds upon the achievements of the #NoMissedSchoolDays project, which has already demonstrated that sustainable, community-led solutions work.
Since its launch, the initiative has:
* Trained more than 400 Guide and Scout leaders in menstrual health management.
* Equipped over 31,000 Guides and Scouts with reusable sanitary pad-making skills and menstrual health education.
* Established youth-led menstrual health programmes in schools and communities.
* Reduced school absenteeism among girls in participating districts.
* Engaged boys, teachers, parents, religious leaders, and local authorities in breaking menstrual stigma.
* Created a menstrual health curriculum that continues to be used by Girl Guides and Scouts across Uganda.
Beyond improving menstrual health, the project has empowered girls to return to school after pregnancy, develop leadership skills, earn an income through reusable pad production, and become advocates for gender equality within their own communities.
A Global Partnership for Menstrual Equity
Menstruate Without Hesitation #NoMissedSchoolDays is strengthened through an international collaboration with **Periodo de Cambio** in Mexico, bringing together organisations that share a common vision of menstrual equity and girls' empowerment.
This partnership creates opportunities for cross-cultural learning, exchange of innovative menstrual health education methodologies, reusable pad production techniques, and youth-led advocacy strategies. By connecting experiences from Latin America and Africa, the campaign demonstrates that menstrual health is a global challenge requiring locally led solutions supported by international collaboration.
Together, we are creating a global network of young women who are not only managing their periods with dignity but are also becoming educators, entrepreneurs, advocates, and leaders within their communities.
Sustainable by Design
Our work goes beyond menstrual health. We are committed to environmental sustainability by promoting reusable menstrual products and exploring the use of recycled materials including discarded umbrellas and tents to produce reusable sanitary pads. This reduces waste, lowers costs for families, and demonstrates how climate action and gender equality can work hand in hand.
